Because there’s a dearth of outlets covering interesting music that defies algorithms, covering music that might not be considered sexy (i.e. Canadian), covering music of interest to people who may think they don’t have the time or the youth to follow new music, covering upcoming live music events in Toronto, and… you get the idea.

Michael Barclay is the author of three bestselling books about Canadian music. Hearts on Fire: Six Years That Changed Canadian Music 2000-05 came out in April 2022. The Never-Ending Present: The Story of Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip came out in April 2018, was an instant national bestseller, and was reissued in paperback in 2019. Have Not Been the Same: The CanRock Renaissance 1985-95 was co-written with Jason Schneider and Ian A.D. Jack; it came out in 2001 and was reissued in 2011.

Barclay has also written for Maclean’s, the Globe and Mail, Exclaim!, the New York Times and more, and worked for CBC Music’s Brave New Waves and Radio 3. He had a weekly music review column in the Waterloo Region Record for almost 20 years—so you know he’s capable of pumping out weekly content. Paid subscribers will have access to historical material related to his three books, a weekly column, recommendations and more.
